Prologue: Mirage Isle
Mirage Isle was not actually an island, but rather a continent of great size which was hidden away from the rest of its planet. This continent was rather large in size, and was inhabited by a countless amount of humans.
One specie of human was known as Diantion. It was a pale-skinned race with bright, colorful hair. The genetics for Diantion irises had a very high mutation rate, which made the race have almost no limit to its eye colors. Their hair colors consisted of every color of the rainbow, with most colors having 3 shades. Diantions were the majority in Mirage Isle, and they lived in most areas of the continent.
The other specie of human was known as Darkian. They were named after the mysterious dark powers they were born with. Their hair and eye colors were far more limited than their colorful cousins. Their hair could only be black or extremely dark brown. It was hard to see what color a Darkians hair or eye colors were due to their darkness. Darkians were the minority in Mirage Isle.
This story takes place in Mirage Isles capitol, which was named Miracle City. This large city was home to over one million people, and was somewhat squished between two natural forts: the Palmali Jungle and the Golden Sun Desert. This left only the citys eastern and western borders open for travel.
The Palmali Jungle was protected by the Mirage Isle Forest Preservation Act, so the forest itself was to remain untouched by human development. The jungle itself was rumored to contain many dangerous, including poisons and animals of which mankind had never seen. The people who were born and raised in Miracle City believed this rumor to be true, so they stayed away from it.
The Golden Sun Desert was a vast wasteland of sand unfit for Diantion life. There were opinions and rumors that an evil group of Darkians lived in the deserts depths, though this was often the center of local controversies.
This story centers around Zack, or Zachary Talibur, a 9-year-old boy living with adopted foster parents. Zack had bright yellow hair and bright blue eyes. He was always seen wearing golden chain with golden topaz hanging from it. The golden topaz was shaped like a lightning emblem. At times, the inside of the topaz showed an image of lively sparks.
Zack was a child who lived a traumatic early childhood. He was found wandering the wilderness as a feral three-year-old. The citizens of a neighboring city spent a few weeks trying to catch the boy, but without avail.
It was a lone woman who tamed the child. Her name was Mary Talibur, a pink-haired, pink-eyed woman who was childless, but desired children of her own. Her kind personality and sweet voice calmed the feral child, and she was able to call him to her. She took him in as a foster child, then later adopted him as her own.
Mary Talibur was the wife of George Talibur, and both of them were from Miracle City. They moved to Levi city when Mary was transferred from Miracle Citys hospital to Levi citys hospital. The adopted family lived 9 years there, before Mary was transferred again. This time, she was transferred back to her hometown, so her family was forced to move with her. This story begins shortly after they settled in their new home.
Chapter 1: Alone in a New City
Zack opened his eyes and looked at the ceiling of his new bedroom with disappointment. Ever since his move to Miracle City, the young boy had been hoping to wake up and find that his move was all a dream. But it never happened.
Zack sat up and stretched. He looked around his new bedroom with dissatisfaction, then turned to his nightstand, where his necklace was placed. Zack grabbed his necklace and slid it on over his neck then got dressed and combed his bright yellow hair.
After he was ready for the day, Zack headed downstairs to join his adopted parents at the dining room table. George was watching television as he waited on breakfast to be served.
Zack sweetheart. Mary said, coming out of the kitchen to place the food on the table. Zack knew what was coming, so he thought the words his mother said it. George and I both have to work today
youll be fine here alone, right? Mary asked.
Yes. Zack replied, trying not to sound upset. As much as he hated being left home alone, he didnt want his mother or father to feel bad about it.
Im hoping to bring one of my old friends over after work, so try not to make a mess while were gone today! Mary said. Zack nodded in response.
You know Mary
George said, as everyone sat down to breakfast. I cant really blame Zack for feeling this way. The city wouldnt let him into the public schools, and none of our neighbors have children. We should take him to the park or somewhere and let him make friends. He stated.
Mary nodded. I agree. Maybe we can try to do that tomorrow? Mary asked, George shook his head. Oh
thats right. You have work tomorrow. Well, I dont have work, so I can take him to the park! Mary said, smiling.
Zack smiled and his spirit lightened. The way his bright blue eyes sparkled with delight made Mary giggle. You have something to look forward to now, dont you? Mary asked. Zack nodded.
After breakfast, Mary and George headed out to their jobs, leaving Zack home alone. Zack sat down on the couch and wondered what he should do to pass the time.
Back in Levi City, Zack was never really left at home all alone when his parents worked. His next-door neighbors were a Darkian family of four, and the mother was a stay-at-home mom. Whenever Zacks parents had to work at the same time, Zack just went next door and hung out there all day. The Darkian mother didnt mind watching over Zack at all, and her son Seth was Zacks best friend. Zack never minded his parents working
until they moved to Miracle City.
Zack grabbed the television remote and began to flip through the channels. As usual on a school day, there wasnt anything interesting on; just shows for children too young to go to school. Zack watched one of the shows out of boredom, but lost interest after about fifteen minutes.
Zack sighed and wondered what he should do next. He wondered why the Miracle City schools said that he couldnt enter them. Was it because of his strange electrical powers? Mary had told him it was because he was too smart, but what was that supposed to mean?
Zack had something that no other Diantion had, and that was the use of electricity-based powers. In fact, somehow or another, Zack had the ability to absorb and control electricity. His body acted like a lightning rod, directing most electrical discharges to himself. The most shocking of all was that Zack was entirely immune to the pain that electricity caused. He had been struck by lightning before and felt nothing! Instead, his body absorbed the electricity and supplied extra energy afterward.
Zack had only recently discovered that he could control the electricity that his body collected. He could discharge it on command, and not only that, but he could aim it wherever he wanted, and it seemed to obey.
Zacks powers were completely unexplained. Nobody understood them. Zack had apparently had these powers ever since he was found wandering the wilderness. Nobody knew how he had them, or what they even were. It was a complete mystery.
Zack grabbed some notebook paper and a pencil, and sat down at the coffee table to write a letter to his friend Seth. He had promised to keep in touch with his best friend, but he forgot to ask for Seths phone number. Zack knew the address, but he didnt know the phone number.
While Zack was writing his letter, the 12:00 news came on. Zack tried to ignore the news and write his letter, but one particular segment caught Zacks attention.
The nightly robberies are continuing here in Miracle City with last night being the third night in a row. Thieves made off with over 500 dollars of equipment from various stores last night. The items stolen ranged from handy items like electric drills and hammers to strange items like beanbag chairs and cooking oil. While there is no doubt that many items have been stolen from shops around Miracle City, there isnt any suspects either, as security cameras were destroyed in all of the shops where things were stolen.
Miracle City seemed to have a lot of robberies. It somewhat worried Zack as he wondered
what if the bandits came to his house? He shook off his worry and continued to write his letter.
After he had finished writing his letter, Zack put his letter in an envelope and addressed it properly. Zack had yet to memorize his address, so he didnt put his return address on the envelope. He took the envelope outside and opened the mailbox. At that moment, the wind kicked up and blew the envelope straight out of Zacks hand!
The letter he had wrote escaped its paper container and flew even further away than the envelope itself. Without thinking, Zack ran after the paper, picking up the envelope on the way. He chased the letter for about a block.
Zack caught up to his letter and picked it up. He turned around to return to his house, but was confronted by a large, snarling dog! H-hi
Zack said, nervously. The dog attempted to attack Zack, but the boy was fast enough to start running the other way.
Zack ran for a good twenty minutes. The dog gave chase for quite a while, before finally giving up. Zack glanced back to see if the dog was still chasing him, and as he did so, he ran into somebody. Zack fell backwards from the impact.
Oh! Im so sorry! Zack said, hastily getting up. Zack stood in shocked silence as he saw the man he had collided with. Zack had never seen a man with dark yellow hair and dark green eyes before. The man stared at Zack with a vague scowl. I was running from this dog
a-and I didnt see you. I-I
I hope I didnt hurt you
Zack said, nervously.
You didnt. Tell me, child: What are you doing on this side of town? the man asked in a stern voice.
Zack stared at the man for a second. W-What side? he asked, nervously.
This is known as the dark side of town. Its ruled by villains, thugs and other such sorts. Children such as you shouldnt be here. The man said.
Zack looked at his surroundings. The buildings in this area had fallen into disrepair. The grass grew tall, the streets were littered with trash and debris. Zack had been so focused on getting away from the dog that he hadnt realized how far he had traveled. This was nothing like the neighborhood where Zack lived. I-Im lost
Zack remarked, fidgeting.
The man raised his arm and pointing over Zacks head, in the direct Zack had come from. Head straight that way until you get to Johnson Street. Never go past that street again. That street heads straight through Miracle City, so it is a sort of line between the good and bad side of town. The man explained.
T-Thank you sir. Zack replied, before turning around and heading off in the direction. He hoped that he wouldnt run into that dog again.
Zack was quick to notice that this side of town was eerily empty. The houses and buildings were boarded up and falling apart from disrepair. Trash littered the streets. Was this side of town abandoned? Why exactly was that?
Zack walked for quite a while before finally finding Johnson street. Zacks house was on Westward street, but somehow or another, Zack had ended up on some other street. He didnt remember turning any corners while running, so he just continued walking straight.
Zack wandered the neighborhoods trying to find Westward street, but to no avail. He was hungry and tired. He was alone and scared. Zack found a bus stop bench and sat down on it. He fought back tears as he wondered if he was ever going to see George or Mary again. The sun was setting, and Zack still hadnt found his way home.
The sky was beginning to darken, so Zack got up and began to travel once more. Maybe if he could find somebody and ask them where he was
A car pulled up beside Zack. It was a police car! If anybody could help Zack get home, it was a policeman! A man with yellow hair and reddish-orange eyes stepped out of the car.
You there! Theres a curfew in this town, you know! The policeman said. He spoke in a harsh tone. The policemen in Levi city spoke in a nicer tone.
I-I know. Zack replied, wearily fidgeting. The policeman crossed his arms.
You know, huh? the policeman asked. Then why are you out past it? Its 7:34 right now, and the curfew starts at seven! he snapped.
I-I dont want to be out past curfew, sir! I got lost! Zack remarked honestly.
The policeman rolled his eyes. If I had a nickel for every time I heard that excuse! The punishment for being out past curfew is being taken to the police station under juvenile arrest! he remarked.
Now Zack really felt like crying. No! I really had no intention of being out this late! he remarked. Honest!
The policeman walked around his car as he remarked, Yeah, yeah
Ive heard that one too. Youre coming with me! Zacks eyes began to water.
Another car pulled up behind the police car, and just as the policeman was getting his handcuffs out, a loud angry womans voice exclaimed, LUIS LAWSON!
Both Zack and the policeman startled, and the policeman spun around. C-Chief Connie! he remarked. A woman with medium red hair and purple eyes stepped out of drivers side of the new car. Out of the passengers side came Mary, who ran up to Zack and hugged him.
Chief Connie! I was about to apprehend this delinquent! the policeman said. The short-haired woman crossed her arms and scowled at the policeman. It was obvious that she was the police chief.
Can you not see that hes just a child, and that he has no harmful intentions? As a police officer you arent just supposed to arrest those who break the law. Youre supposed to help those in need as well. How many times must I tell you that? the police chief asked. She then circled around the policeman and walked up to Zack and Mary.
Thank you for helping me find him, Connie. Mary said, turning to the red-haired woman.
Connie shook her head. Helping the citizens is part of my job. Im just glad we were able to find him before he was arrested. She said, glancing at the policeman. Zack wiped the tears from his eyes.
Its okay now Zack. Mary said. This is my friend Connie. This is the person I said I was inviting over earlier. Shes also the police chief! Mary said. Connie, this is my son, Zack.
Connie and Zack shook hands, though Zacks emotional trauma was quite apparent. Come on, get in my car. Ill take you both home. Connie said, walking back to her vehicle. Mary walked over towards the car as well.
. Im watching you, kid. Dont let me catch you out after dark again. Luis said, lowly yet sternly. His words intimidated Zack, and the boy raced over and hopped into the backseat of the car.
Once at home, George, Mary and Connie asked Zack why he was so far away from home, and out past curfew. I wrote a letter to Seth and after I finished it, I put it in an envelope. I put stamps on the envelope and took it outside to the mailbox, but when I tried to put it in, the wind kicked up and blew the letter out of my hand! The envelope only fell a couple of feet away but the letter flew out of the envelope and I chased after it. After I caught it, I realized that this really nasty dog was about to attack me! I tried being nice to it but it attacked me and I ran. When the dog stopped chasing me, I realized I didnt know where I was! Or how to get back home! Zack explained.
Well, at least youre unharmed. Mary said with a sigh. I was so worried about you when we discovered you werent home! she added.
You two are blessed to have such an honest boy. If only all of the kids in Miracle City were like him. Connie said.
After that, Connie and Mary began to talk about all that had happened in their lives since the last time they had seen each-other. Zack stayed silent, traumatized by his awful experience, but he listened to the two adults talk. Connie seemed to be a very righteous woman. She also seemed to have two sisters, an older one and a younger one.
Zack didnt leave the house for three days after the experience he had. He kept to himself about it, never mentioning the strange man he had run into. A normal week passed
